Earning the ENERGY STAR means a product meets strict energy efficiency guidelines set by the US Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy. For TVs, it means they save energy when they are turned off.
ENERGY STAR qualified TVs use about 30% less energy than standard units.
You can find the ENERGY STAR on everything from standard TVs, to HD-ready TVs, to the largest flat-screen plasma TVs.

Starting in November 2008, a new, much more stringent ENERGY STAR specification for TVs will be effective that includes requirements for both standby and active (when they’re on) modes. TVs that earn the ENERGY STAR label under these requirements will be up to 30% more efficient than non-qualified models. Manufacturers have already started qualifying their models ahead of the November 1, 2008 effective date.
